The best Caribbean island to visit: how to choose yours.

There is no single best island, only the best one for your trip

Every family that asks me for the best Caribbean island to visit wants something a little different. One wants the shortest flight with young kids, one wants the clearest water they have ever seen, one wants a honeymoon with a view, one wants the most vacation for the money. The Caribbean is big enough to answer all of them, and it is rarely the same island. So start with what you want, then match it to the island that does it best.

The islands, one by one

The Bahamas is the closest to the United States, which makes it the easy answer for a first trip or a short one. Flights are quick, especially from the East Coast, and the resorts are built for families. If you want to spend less time traveling and more time on the sand, start here.

Turks and Caicos is, for many travelers, home to the best beach in the Caribbean. Grace Bay is a long stretch of soft white sand and calm, clear, shallow water, and it lives up to the photos. It is also home to Beaches, the family version of Sandals, which makes it a strong pick for parents who want an all-inclusive with the kids along. Jamaica gives you the most variety and, often, the best all-inclusive value. It has mountains, waterfalls, music, and a long list of resorts at every price point, including many Sandals properties for couples. If you want options and a lively feel, Jamaica is hard to beat.

Saint Lucia is the most romantic island I plan. The Piton mountains rise straight out of the sea, the scenery is dramatic in a way the flatter islands are not, and the Sandals resorts there include over-water bungalows. For a honeymoon or an anniversary, this is my first suggestion.

Aruba has the most reliable weather on this list. It is dry, sunny, and sits outside the main hurricane belt, so it is the safest bet during storm season or any time you do not want to gamble on rain. The beaches are excellent and the island is easy to get around.

Punta Cana, on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, is where I send families who want the best all-inclusive value. The resorts are large, the beaches are long, and your dollar tends to go further here than almost anywhere else in the Caribbean. It is a great choice when budget is leading the decision.

Antigua and Barbados are both known for beautiful beaches and a slightly more upscale, laid-back feel. Antigua is famous for having a beach for nearly every day of the year, and Barbados pairs its beaches with charming towns and good food. Either one is a lovely choice when you want something a little less crowded.

The US Virgin Islands, mainly St. Thomas and St. John, are a US territory, which means US citizens do not need a passport to visit. St. Thomas is lively with shopping and easy transfers, and St. John is quieter and greener, with protected land and some of the prettiest coves in the Caribbean. If a passport is a hurdle, this is your island.

How to choose the right one

A few simple questions usually settle it.

How far do you want to fly? If a short flight matters, the Bahamas wins, with the US Virgin Islands and Turks and Caicos close behind. The farther south you go, the longer the travel day.

Beaches or adventure? If you mostly want to lie on perfect sand, Turks and Caicos and Aruba are hard to beat. If you want waterfalls, hikes, and things to do off the resort, Jamaica and Saint Lucia give you more to explore.

What is your budget? Punta Cana and Jamaica tend to offer the most all-inclusive value, while Turks and Caicos, Saint Lucia, and Barbados sit at the higher end. I can price several islands side by side so you decide with real numbers.

When are you going? Atlantic hurricane season runs roughly from June through November. Most trips during that window are perfectly fine, but if you want the lowest risk, Aruba and the ABC islands sit outside the main belt and stay dry.

And if you need to travel without a passport, choose the US Virgin Islands.
