If the two of you would rather hike than lie on a beach, the US National Parks are a romantic and underrated choice, whether that is a lodge in the Grand Tetons, red rock in Utah, or a cabin near Yellowstone. Both options skip international airfare and passport timing, which keeps everything simple.

Culture and romance: Italy and Greece

If your idea of romance is a long dinner, a glass of wine, and centuries of history outside the window, choose culture over sand. Italy rewards honeymooners with Rome, Florence, the Amalfi Coast, and Venice, often on one trip. Greece pairs the whitewashed cliffs and sunsets of Santorini with island time in places like Mykonos or the beaches of Crete. These trips are about food, scenery, and walking hand in hand through old streets. The shoulder seasons of late spring and early fall bring lovely weather and thinner crowds.

Close and affordable: Mexico's Riviera Maya

For couples who want the Caribbean feel without a long flight or a big price tag, Mexico's Riviera Maya is hard to beat. It is my go-to for a relaxing beach honeymoon that is close and affordable.

Adventure: an African safari, often paired with a beach

For the couple who wants a honeymoon with a pulse, few things compare to an African safari. Mornings tracking wildlife across the plains, evenings around a fire under an enormous sky, and lodges that are romantic in a way no resort can copy. Because you are already that far from home, many couples pair the safari with a beach to unwind afterward, often the spice-island beaches of Zanzibar off Tanzania, or the resorts of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean. It is the ultimate two-part honeymoon: adventure first, then reward.

How to choose the right one

With so many good options, choosing comes down to a few honest questions. What is your budget once flights and the resort are counted? How far are you willing to fly? Do you have current passports, and if not, is there time to get them? And most of all, are the two of you dreaming of a beach, a city, or an adventure?

Season matters too. The Atlantic hurricane season runs roughly June through November, with the highest risk late summer into fall, so I watch those dates for Caribbean and Mexico trips, while Europe is loveliest in its shoulder seasons.
