Magic Kingdom: the rides everyone pictures

Magic Kingdom is where most families start, and it holds the widest mix of rides for every age. The two headliners are Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, a family coaster that swings and sways through the diamond mine, and Tron Lightcycle Run, the newest and fastest coaster in the park, where you lean forward onto a Lightcycle and launch. Space Mountain still delivers its dark, indoor roller-coaster thrill, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is the runaway mine train most kids can ride once they reach the height mark. That spread of coasters, from a first family ride up to a genuine thrill, is why I usually build a Magic Kingdom day early in the trip.

For the gentler side of the family, this park is unmatched. Peter Pan's Flight sails you over London in a pirate galleon and stays a favorite for the youngest travelers. Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion are slow, story-rich rides that little ones and grandparents enjoy together. And Jungle Cruise, with its groan-worthy skipper jokes, is a gentle, all-ages boat ride that lands a little differently for every guest. If you are traveling with a wide range of ages, Magic Kingdom gives everyone something.

EPCOT: thrills and charm side by side

EPCOT surprises people. Its biggest ride, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, is a genuinely thrilling coaster that spins to face the action and launches you into the story, and it sits near the top of nearly every big kid's Disney World list. Test Track lets you design a virtual vehicle and then take it out at speed. Those two are the thrill anchors.

Then the park turns warm. Frozen Ever After is a gentle boat ride through Arendelle that younger children adore, Remy's Ratatouille Adventure is a family-friendly trackless dark ride that shrinks you to the size of a rat scurrying through the kitchen, and Soarin' Around the World is the hang-gliding simulator that floats you over landmarks across the globe. Soarin' is one of those rare rides that works for almost everyone, from grade-schoolers to grandparents. Between those five, EPCOT quietly gives a family more range than people expect, which is why I rarely let anyone skip it.

Hollywood Studios: the biggest thrills on property

If your family is chasing marquee thrill rides, Hollywood Studios is your park. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is widely called the best ride Disney has ever built, a long, multi-part experience that drops you into the middle of a battle between the Resistance and the First Order. The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror plunges you down a haunted elevator shaft, and Rock 'n' Roller Coaster launches you from a standstill into loops with an Aerosmith soundtrack. Those three are for the big kids and adults.

The park still takes care of everyone else. Slinky Dog Dash is a family coaster in Toy Story Land that most younger kids can handle and love. Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run puts you in the cockpit of the fastest ship in the galaxy, and Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway is a gentle-motion dark ride any age can enjoy. It is the rare park with a true headliner for both the thrill-seekers and the little ones.

Animal Kingdom: the most immersive rides at Disney World

Animal Kingdom has fewer rides than the others, but two of them rank among the best anywhere. Avatar Flight of Passage is a flying simulator over the world of Pandora that regularly tops guest polls as the single best ride at Disney World, and it is a must for anyone tall enough and comfortable with the motion. Expedition Everest is a high-speed coaster that races forward and backward past a mountain yeti, the park's big thrill.

For the gentler travelers, Na'vi River Journey is a calm, beautiful boat ride through a glowing bioluminescent forest, perfect for the youngest members of the family. And Kilimanjaro Safaris is exactly what it sounds like, a real open-vehicle ride through savanna where you spot live lions, giraffes, and elephants. No two safaris are the same, and it is a highlight for every age.

The headliners draw the longest lines. Here is how you still ride them.

A handful of rides pull the longest waits all day: Rise of the Resistance, Cosmic Rewind, Avatar Flight of Passage, Tron Lightcycle Run, and Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. Show up hoping to wing it and you can lose two or three hours in standby lines for just those five, which is how families end up worn out and still missing the rides they flew across the country for.

The fix is a Lightning Lane strategy. Disney's paid Lightning Lane system lets you reserve shorter lines for the rides that matter most, but only if you book the right ones at the right times, and a few of the very top rides work differently from the rest. Ask ten Disney fans for the best ride at Disney World and you will get ten answers, because the real best ride is the one that fits the person riding it. A four-year-old's perfect day is Peter Pan's Flight, Frozen Ever After, and the safari. A teenager's is Rise of the Resistance, Cosmic Rewind, and Flight of Passage.
